A former Bolsonaro advisor revealed that he planned a coup d’état after losing the elections

Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid collaborated with the Brazilian Federal Police in the investigation against the former president for possible crimes, from embezzlement of funds to inciting his followers to attack government institutions.

He Jair Bolsonaro’s former advisor, Mauro Cidrevealed to the Federal Police that the Former president of Brazil presented a coup d’état plan to the heads of the Armed Forces to not recognize Lula da Silva’s electoral victory in 2022.

Lieutenant Colonel Cid collaborated with the security forces as part of his cooperation agreement after being detained on May 3 for falsifying Bolsonaro’s Covid-19 vaccination record so that he could enter the United States. The Federal Police investigates the former president for possible crimes, from embezzlement of funds to incite his followers to riot January in the capital, Brasilia.

The local media UOL revealed that the former president’s coup strategy was planned by his special advisor on international affairs, Filipe Martins, a leader of Brazilian libertarians and former consultant to the United States embassy in Brazil. While he held that position, he introduced Bolsonaro to then-President Donald Trump’s advisor, Steve Bannon, considered one of the ideologues of the new far-right.

UOL also detailed that the former president consulted with a constitutional lawyer a document called “Draft of the coup”which found in article 142 of the National Constitution a justification for the military to detain the judges of the electoral court and the Supreme Court.

The objective was annul the second round elections that took place on October 30, 2022 when Lula da Silva won with 50.9% of the votes.

Lawyers for Cid and Bolsonaro did not respond to requests for comment on the reports. The Federal Police said it does not comment on ongoing investigations..

Bolsonaro is accused of setting up a election denial movement which culminated with a January 8 assault on government buildings in Brasilia by thousands of his supporters. Brazil’s federal electoral court already He was banned from running for office until 2030..
