Legendary motorsport duo completed their very last laps in Pitzenberg

They competed again at the 13th Oldtimer Grand Prix recently held in Pitzenberg, but now the Schwanenstadt brothers Günther (56) and Hermann Bachmaier (57) announced the end of their sidecar careers.

In 1977 – as a ten-year-old – Günther Bachmaier experienced the legendary street races in Oberndorf practically on his doorstep and was fascinated by the motorsport performances. When the Oldtimer Grand Prix was held for the first time in 1998 on the Hausruckring, not far from the former race track, Günther was on duty there as a fire extinguisher for the Schwanenstadt volunteer fire department. He always got “goosebumps” when he was driving the sidecar and his thought was: “I want to do that too.” Said and done: Günther asked his brother Hermann if he wanted to be his passenger. It was the beginning of a long-term and internationally successful sidecar career.

After several victories in mountain races, he also went on the circuit in 2010. With various co-drivers, Günther, who has now matured into a world-class pilot, won the international Sidecar Trophy championship in the 600 F2 classification in 2014 and 2015, in addition to numerous national Sidecar Trophy races. In 2016 he became runner-up in the FIM Sidecar F2 World Trophy with co-driver Manfred Wechselberger. A ninth place in the 2017 FIM Sidecar World Championship – for the first time with an F1-600 – rounds off the numerous international successes.

After so many years at the top international level, Günther Bachmaier has now decided to say goodbye to motorsport for good and looks back with a lot of joy and sadness: “I don’t want to miss any of the many beautiful moments or experiences in my long-standing motorsport career.” And exactly where it all began many years ago, namely in his immediate home at the Vintage Car Grand Prix, Bachmaier said goodbye to motorsport. To the enthusiastic cheers of his numerous fans, he and his brother Hermann completed their very last laps on the Hausruckring in front of thousands of spectators.
