Nagelsmann confirmed as DFB national coach: “I’m really keen to take on the challenge”

A good nine months before the home European Championship, the 36-year-old is supposed to get the team back on track as Hansi Flick’s successor. Nagelsmann, who was somewhat surprisingly released from Bayern Munich during an international break in March, was considered a preferred candidate.

However, his contract with the German record champions, which runs until 2026, had to be terminated first. His involvement with the DFB is initially dated until after the European Championships. “We have a European Championship in our own country. This is something special – something that happens every few decades,” emphasized Nagelsmann in an association statement. “I subordinate everything to the fact of having a great tournament in a great country. I am very keen to take on this challenge.” Former national striker Sandro Wagner and Benjamin Glück will support him as assistant coaches.

Nagelsmann was considered the preferred candidate

“With his qualities and personality, Julian Nagelsmann will make a crucial contribution to ensuring that we can all experience a great European Championship in our own country in the summer,” said Rudi Völler, who played a key role in the search after the Flick exit and his own interim assignment of a successor.

Nagelsmann made his debut as a coach at Hoffenheim in February 2016. At the age of 28, he became the youngest head coach in Bundesliga history. He led the relegation-threatened team to stay in the league and two years later even into the Champions League. From 2019 onwards he also competed with RB Leipzig and reached the semi-finals. After these successes, the call came from Munich and Bayern transferred around 20 million transfer fees to Leipzig.

It’s a bit of déjà vu for Nagelsmann, because he had already inherited Flick in 2021. At that time he moved from Bayern Munich to the DFB, but had little success in his new position. At the World Cup in Qatar, Germany failed in the group phase, but the ripcord was only pulled on September 10th after the team lost three games in a row for the first time in 40 years.
