Even though LASK lost 3-1 in the sold-out Upper Austria Arena against 19-time English football champions FC Liverpool at the start of the Europa League, the black and whites left a lasting impression on the English media landscape.
“A surprisingly confident LASK shocked the ‘Reds’ in the first half,” wrote the Daily Mirror. “Liverpool were kept at bay by LASK in the first half, taking three points after an unimpressive display in which they were stunned by Flecker’s opener,” BBC Sport said.
“It was a final for LASK. Liverpool hopes it was the first step towards the Europa League final in Dublin,” read the Liverpool Echo. “LASK was highly motivated and took the lead through Florian Flecker’s brilliant goal. Jürgen Klopp’s team learned that the path to their desired Europa League title will be tough,” said The Independent.
“LASK were strong, well prepared and took advantage of Liverpool’s weaknesses. Liverpool took command with two goals in seven minutes,” said the Daily Mail.
The German trade magazine “Kicker” also found words of praise for the athletes: “LASK challenged Liverpool, but did not reward itself for a courageous performance.”
