“Lufthunder” on the A1 remains

Since 2008, the 13-kilometer stretch on the A1 between Linz and Enns has been subject to a speed limit of 100 km/h based on the Air Immission Control Act (IG-L). State Environment Councilor Stefan Kaineder (Greens) considers it “out of the question” that the “air hundred” could fall, as in Salzburg. “In the spirit of the precautionary principle,” it is important to “act with foresight” and “prevent burdens on people and the environment from occurring in the first place.”

In addition, a tightening of air quality guidelines at EU level is expected soon. The limit is currently 40 micrograms of nitrogen oxides per cubic meter; a draft by the EU Commission envisages halving it to 20 micrograms. “We are currently discussing limits that will no longer exist in the near future anyway,” says Kaineder. Since 2012, the emission limit in Austria has been 30 micrograms per cubic meter.

If the EU limit is actually halved, according to Kaineder, “much more ambitious measures” will be needed, such as further circuits and accelerated electrification of transport in Austria.

Measurements are taken at the Enns-Kristein measuring point right next to the A1. By switching on the flexible speed limit, the annual average nitrogen dioxide level could be reduced by 1.9 from 30.9 to 29.0 micrograms. Since the pollutant limit would be exceeded without the traffic control system, it could continue to be prescribed.
