The rescue of a heavily pregnant woman in the devastated Ukrainian city of Mariupol, held by Evgeniy Maloletka, became a symbol of the war in Ukraine and shocked people around the world. It was named overall winner in the single image category at the “World Press Photo” show, which can be seen at Vienna’s WestLicht gallery until November 12th.
“It’s about the influence of the environment on people,” explains curator Julia Kozakiewicz, explaining the central theme of the project, which ranges from natural disasters to the suppressed struggle for freedom among women in Iran. More than 3,700 photographers from 127 countries took part in the competition, documenting the year’s events in 120 photos.
