A new event format from the Dominikanerhaus and the Steyr State Music School will bring major Steyr art personalities – men and women – in front of the curtain once a semester from Friday. “The format ‘O Musica! You noble art’ aims to make the music-historical relevance of the old Eisenstadt audible and visible again,” says music school director and co-initiator Martin Fiala. It starts on Friday, September 29th, at 6 p.m. with an introduction in the Dominican House – just like you know from the big music festival in Grafenegg. To kick off, the new series of events is dedicated to Sebastian Ertel (1555 to 1618) and Paul Peuerl (1570 to 1625) – a Catholic and a Protestant church musician in the immediate vicinity. In a report from the Steyr city archives, the priest Ertel describes that he walked through Steyr in the Benedictine order and was almost killed by the city population. “During the time of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, church music was much more peaceful than outside the secular gates,” says Fiala. In church music at the time, many self-respecting composers emulated Giovanni Gabrieli, the Venetian church musician at St. Mark’s Basilica on the threshold from the Renaissance to the Baroque.
After the introduction comes the listening pleasure. Soprano Martina Landl and the brass players from Solid Brass perform works by Peuerl and Ertel. “But we also want to show what was happening musically in Germany and England at that time, and end with Johann Sebastian Bach,” explains Fiala.
Bruckner and Schubert
Spring 2024 is all about Anton Bruckner – an addition to a large exhibition in the city museum. The brass instruments are replaced by choirs. “Anton Bruckner spent summers in Steyr for more than 20 years, he worked here and maintained many friendships – Steyr can rightly bear the name Brucknerstadt,” says Fiala.
After Bruckner in spring, another big name – Franz Schubert – is waiting to be examined in more detail in autumn 2024.
Musically speaking, March 2025 is all about women. Hilde Hager-Zimmermann and other music-making women in Steyr and the surrounding area should then receive the attention that was mostly denied to them during their lifetime.
