The bike boom triggered by the spread of ever more powerful electric mountain bikes does not stop at Weitersfelden. The mountain bike group, which has been running regularly in town for several years, was able to more than double its number of participants this year alone. Every Thursday, the bikes, mainly e-bikes, are saddled up and the area is explored on planned tours with nice places to stop for refreshments.
This encouragement has now been used as an opportunity to create a mountain bike section at the Sportunion. At the founding meeting, Peter Mühlbachler was elected as section leader, Jakob Mayrhofer as deputy, and Norbert Ruhaltinger, Herbert Glocker, Thomas Lengauer and Thomas Mühlbachler were elected to the section leadership. “The enthusiasm around cycling is great. The founding of the section is very gratifying for our club. It’s nice that several people have found themselves who work in the section management,” says chairman Klaus Preining.
A major goal of the section is now to create an official mountain bike route in Weitersfelden in order to encourage the many local and non-local cyclists to use these cycle routes. This is intended to restrict “wild driving”. During the planning and future discussions, those responsible hope for mutual understanding between community and tourism officials, farmers, hunters, riders and restaurants.
