Millions in funding for quantum research at the JKU

In the future, quantum computers will be able to solve tasks, such as simulations in natural sciences, more quickly than conventional computers. However, research is still a long way from the “ideal” quantum computer. “The quantum computers we currently have are still quite small and not particularly powerful,” says JKU researcher Richard Küng.

He has been working for years on combining currently available quantum computers with existing conventional computers. To achieve this, bottlenecks in the transfer of information between the “classical world” and the “quantum world” must be overcome.

In the “q-shadows” project (loosely translated as quantum shadows), Küng and his team are developing a method that is based on random generation and can be used to precisely describe a quantum system. The “shadows” would open up numerous new perspectives for applications of quantum computing in various areas such as simulation, optimization and artificial intelligence.

The computer scientist received the FWF START Prize in the summer for such “quantum-classical interfaces”, which combine methods from classical computer science with quantum information. On top of that, the project is now being funded by the European Research Council (ERC) with 1.5 million euros.

“The funding means a lot to me – it shows that research at the JKU is competitive in the European research field and that we can make a significant contribution here,” says Küng. According to JKU Rector Meinhard Lukas, Küng is only the second JKU researcher to have received both funding.
