Armed men attacked a university town in northwestern Nigeria and kidnapped more than 30 people, including 24 female students, local media reported today, citing witnesses.

Several dozen armed men yesterday stormed the village of Sabon Gida, near the Federal University of Gusau, on the outskirts of the state capital of Zamfara, and broke into three residences for female students and kidnapped their occupants, the news agency reported. AFP news.
These men “kidnapped at least 24 students in the hostels, as well as two neighbors, one of them a member of the university staff,” said Sahabi Musa, who lives near these hostels.
The attackers then went to the university and kidnapped nine welders who were working on the construction of a new building, added Shehu Hashimu, another neighbor, who confirmed Musa’s version.
One of the welders managed to escape and returned to the university establishment, according to this resident.
Security forces were deployed to the scene, but a part of the armed group managed to separate the hostages, while the other attackers confronted the military.
This is the first mass kidnapping of students in Nigeria since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came to power, promising to end security problems.
Zamfara is one of the states in northwestern and central Nigeria where these criminal gangs act violently, kidnapping and killing neighbors, and burning houses after looting them.
