On Saturday morning, the Traun fire department and the Franz Feuerstein company fire department were alerted to a house fire. At around 7:15 a.m. the emergency services were alerted to Flötzerstrasse in Traun. The fire apparently started from the balcony of an apartment. The owner was smoking a cigarette there. “Suddenly there were two loud bangs and the battery of the e-scooter caught fire,” reports the police. The apartment owner tried to fight the fire with a fire extinguisher, but failed.
When the firefighters arrived, the ground floor apartment was already fully engulfed in flames. When the first respiratory protection team entered the building, flames were coming from the fire apartment. There was so much smoke in the stairwell that the residents were initially stuck in their apartment. They were gradually brought to safety by the firefighters.
Dog killed in fire
During the course of the operation, 37 people had to be evacuated and one dog had to be rescued, while a second dog could only be rescued from the building dead. Four of the 37 people were taken to hospital: the apartment owner, his wife and two elderly women. The building is temporarily uninhabitable. “The residents were accommodated in alternative quarters,” the state police headquarters said on Saturday afternoon.
