The deaths of 3,845 people have been confirmed, said Mohamed Eljarh, spokesman for the relief committee set up by the authorities in the east of the country. The number only takes into account the deaths whose burials have been registered by the Ministry of Health, so “unfortunately the number is expected to increase every day”.
Dead people who were hastily buried in the first days after the disaster are therefore not included in the list. Officials are currently working with the public on a list of unregistered funerals and a list of missing persons. International aid organizations put the number of missing people at 10,000 or more.
Many flood victims are believed to have been washed into the sea. Others are suspected to be among the rubble that covers entire neighborhoods in the port city of Darna. According to Eljarh, nine foreign teams are still involved in the recovery work.
43,000 people fled
More than 43,000 people have been displaced from the city and neighboring areas in eastern Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said earlier this week.
Storm “Daniel” caused severe flooding in eastern Libya from September 10th to 11th. The city of Darna, with a population of 100,000, was particularly hard hit because two river dams there burst.
