The “Kurier” reported this at the weekend. Veronika Scheffer, managing director of Bergbahnen Zauchensee, is the first to implement this step and hopes to be able to retain day guests, as she announced in the ORF program “Salzburg today”.
In Zauchensee, around a quarter of the skiers are day guests. “Our winter guests are unsettled, seasonal buyers are cautious, we have a lot of emails telling us ‘We have to move to another ski area’,” said Scheffer in “Salzburg Today”. The ski area will therefore open the lifts at 8 a.m. The aim is to enable guests to arrive before the traffic jams and perhaps encourage some to come by train.
Opening times vary
According to Erich Egger, spokesman for the Salzburg cable cars, several ski areas with a high proportion of day guests would consider this. But there is no general industry policy, he said in an interview on Sunday, each ski area decides for itself. “His” Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See, for example, will not open earlier. The ski areas of Zauchensee, Flachau, St. Johann and Werdenweng, among others, have a high proportion of day guests in Salzburg.
Things have started earlier on the Reiteralm since Corona, according to the “Kurier” article (Saturday edition). “Back then, we decided to open at 7:45 a.m. on the weekends. That was very well received,” explained Daniel Berchthaller, managing director of Reiteralm Bergbahnen. Obertauern, with around 4,000 day visitors on peak days, does not want to open the lifts earlier. “That doesn’t change anything,” says tourism director Mario Siedler.
