The election was necessary after the previous ÖVP mayor Ferdinand Aigner resigned from office on June 1st for health reasons. Aigner had made a name for himself beyond the country’s borders, not least with his protest against refugee tents and overcrowding in the Thalham initial reception center.

The voter turnout was 69.31 percent. Mayr-Melnhof ran as an independent candidate for the Aigner List (ÖVP). “It was really a combined team effort,” said the entrepreneur and forester, who prevailed against Maximilian Dollberger (SPÖ, 21.3 percent) and Franz Schneeweiß (FPÖ, 20.2 percent).
