Former Wels fire brigade commander Franz Humer was showered with praise last week at the opening of the rescue fair. “He was their midwife and used his contacts to ensure the success of the trade fair,” said trade fair director Peter Franzmayr gratefully. And because Humer has already received all the awards that are given to people of his rank, from the city of Wels’ perspective, there was only one major honor left.
In front of a large crowd and in the presence of Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, Humer, who had handed over command to his previous deputy Roland Weber last spring, was awarded the title of Honorary Councilor of the Welser Messe.
He has earned this several times. The 63-year-old not only helped with the rescue fair, but was also a valued advisor behind the scenes on all safety issues relating to the fair. “He is the one who stays calm and makes the right decisions with a cool head,” emphasized Mayor Andreas Rabl in his laudatory speech.
A sentence from Humer has been handed down that he said in one of the countless meetings with city officials: “We are already scratching ourselves where others don’t even itch yet.” This admittedly drastic choice of words was intended to express how alert and attentive the Wels fire department and its commander are to the safety of the population.
