The Minister of Defense, Javier Garciawas harsh against the plebiscite proposed by the Pit-Cnt – which was recently approved by the Electoral Court – by establishing that, if the Pension Savings Fund Administrator (AFAP)people’s individual savings would be stolen.
“I am going to go around the country telling people to know that when they ask for your signature to repeal the AFAP they are asking for your signature to steal your savings“García stated at a press conference this Sunday.
García questioned what would happen if AFAP were eliminated in relation to people’s savings and how they would be managed. “What is being proposed with eliminating the AFAP is to steal individual savings, confiscate them to put them in a unnamed bag. For who to manage them? “Who founded Ancap?” remarked the minister.
In that sense, he once again went into depth regarding the plan that the Pit-Cnt in case the social security law is repealed. “They say we must repeal the social security law and in exchange what? If we all know that the social security system. What do they propose in exchange? A commission. And how are they going to pay retirements and pensions with a commission? “It is enormously irresponsible,” he asked himself.
The Electoral Court approved the ballot
He plebiscite of PIT-CNT against social security reform was approved last week by the Electoral Court, which determined that the ballot meets the formal requirements and the union headquarters can now proceed to collect signatures.
The plebiscite, which according to specialists could cost up to 22 billion dollars to the State, now enters the stage in which the PIT-CNT must gather signatures for it to be implemented next year. For this reason, the headquarters will analyze the next steps starting this week.
The person who confirmed that the ballot passed the filter was the Minister of the Electoral Court, Joseph Korzeniak, who specified in dialogue with Subrayado that “it complies with the requirements of the circular that the Court has for these purposes.”
Therefore, the challenge for unionism will now be to reach 10% of those registered on the electoral roll. Thus, it is estimated that he has time until April 27 to gather around 270,000 signatures and then present them to the vice president. Beatriz Argimón, which will then send them to the Electoral Court to verify the validity.
The axes of the PIT-CNT ballot
The plebiscite promoted by the union center, which according to surveys today is validated by 45% of the Uruguayans, has among its main axes the end of AFAP, maintain the retirement age at 60 years and prioritize retirement amounts and minimum pensions.
On the ballot, the PIT-CNT pointed out that “individual savings systems for retirement purposes are prohibited,” thus referring to the AFAP, considering that they must complete their activities within a maximum period of two years “from the entry into force of this reform.”
Regarding the retirement age, it places it at 60 years and establishes that “no retirement or pension may be less than the value of the national minimum wage.”
