Carolina Cosse crossed over to the National Party due to criticism of the cycle path

The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cossedismissed the criticisms made from the National Party (P.N.) by the project to create a Bikeway that unites Plaza Independencia with the Obelisk.

In the traditional party they assured that cyclists could be at “risk of life” when traveling on a bike path of these characteristics. The mayor, for her part, argued at a press conference that “security has been especially taken into account.”

“You have to read what was published. In the cross section you can see that it is a segregated bike path, not separated with paint, it is separated by segregators,” shot the owner of the Montevideo Municipality (I.M.).

The departmental councilor for the PN, Javier Barrios Bovehad pointed out that the idea of a bike lane of this type was “crazy”, since cyclists would be trapped “in a concrete jungle in the middle of 18 de Julio.”

“Personal safety is the central axis of the bike path”

cossestated that dialogues were held with all users of bikes, from the buses themselves, to Grupo Centro businesses and transport companies. “It is something thinking, where people’s safety has been the central axis,” said the department head.

The Bici Convivencia collective also questioned the IM’s plan, maintaining that it does not reduce the insecurity that cyclists already experience, because the fast car lanes would remain on the side of the potential bike lane, “surrounding the cyclist with vehicles at 45 km/h”.

Likewise, they demand the placement of “rigid posts” instead of bollards, “to prevent motorized invasion,” like what is currently happening in other parts of Montevideo.

The also nationalist councilor, Diego Rodríguez, commented that he will summon the IM Transit authorities to the Departmental Board of Montevideo to address the issue of the bike path.
