Uruguay and Chinaits major trading partner, paved the way to renegotiate its export protocols for the first time since 2018.
Mattos explained that the conditions are in place to renegotiate the protocol that establishes the requirements for the export of beef and sheep from Uruguay to the Asian giant, and that the final text will be in force once the evaluation process of the Chinese proposals is completed.
The document, called “Protocol on inspection, quarantine and veterinary health requirements for beef and sheep exported from Uruguay and China“, covers various aspects of the meat trade between both countries.
It is the first time in 5 years that there has been an opening for a renegotiation of the agreement and the arrival of proposals for modifications by Chinathat Uruguay must evaluate.
For its part, Uruguay offered to reduce, from 90 to 46 days, the waiting period for livestock in agricultural establishments, prior to being sent to slaughter for sale abroad.
The minister had already told the media that the Chinese government expressed a “favorable response” to the Uruguayan request, although it is not yet official. “The process must be done cautiously to defend the interests of the Uruguay“said the minister.

The head of the MGAP said that the undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRREE), Nicolas Albertonitraveled this week to the Asian nation along with technicians from his portfolio and from MGAP itself, to hold meetings with health authorities of the Chinese government.
In turn, he commented that the Secretary of the Presidency, Alvaro Delgadowill fly to China next October, and that the president Luis Lacalle Pouwho hopes to hold a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinpingwill do so in November.
