As the Guinness Book of Records announced on its website, the South Tyrolean will now be stripped of this record in the new 2024 edition. Because a team led by mountain chronicler Eberhard Jurgalski discovered that many mountaineers had already descended before reaching the real summit – mostly through no fault of their own, the publisher’s statement states. The background is a question of definition, because the highest point of a mountain that can be reached on foot is considered the summit. Jurgalski’s team discovered that the summits of some eight-thousanders had been set too low for years. The Upper Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner was also stripped of her title for the same reason.
