“34 officers are dead, including the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet,” the Ukrainian special forces said on Monday on the Telegram online service, referring to the attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol on the annexed Crimean peninsula.

According to the information, another 105 people were injured in the attack. The headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet is “beyond repair.” This was “hit in an enemy missile attack” on Friday, as the authorities on the peninsula annexed by Russia announced. As a rule, Moscow does not provide any information about its own losses. The Ukrainian army claimed responsibility for the air strike.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet is stationed in the port of Sevastopol. The city is also home to one of Russia’s command centers for Moscow’s war against Ukraine. From there, the Russian occupation troops in the south of Ukraine are supplied and rocket attacks are controlled.

Since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began in February last year, Crimea has been the target of repeated attacks, which have recently intensified. The Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly stated that it wants to retake Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
