The mafia boss Matteo Messina Denarowho had been under arrest since January after having been a fugitive from justice for 30 years, died this morning at the age of 61.
Messina Denaro, head of the criminal group Cosa Nostradied at the San Salvador hospital in the city of L’Aquila due to a tumor in the colon for which he had been in an irreversible coma since Friday, the Italian press reported.
The mafia boss had been arrested in mid-January at a medical clinic in Palermo, the Sicilian capital, where he went to be treated for the disease.
The criminal had been on the run since 1993 and had received several life sentences.
Among the facts for which had been convicted included the attacks against judges Giovanni Falcone (May 1992) and Paolo Borselino (July 1992), and their bodyguards.
Messina Denaro was also found guilty, among other crimes, of attacks in Rome, Milan and Florence, in addition to the kidnapping and murder of the 12-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo, whom he dissolved in acid in retaliation for his father’s collaboration with the Italian justice system against Cosa Nostra.
