A few weeks after the presentation of this so-called chatbot in November 2022, 100 million users were already experimenting with the software. At the same time, the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) was making headlines more and more often. Companies expect lucrative business from such programs that simulate human interactions or create complete texts based on just a few keywords.
Therefore, numerous companies bring similar software onto the market. Below is a selection:
MICROSOFT
ChatGPT is the trigger for the current AI hype. The program was developed by the company OpenAI, in which Microsoft secured almost half of the shares for 10 billion dollars (9.4 billion euros). The software company is integrating this technology into its search engine Bing, among other things, in order to break Google’s dominance in Internet searches and to get a larger piece of the revenue pie from online advertising. But the AI “Copilot” is also intended to make work easier in its other products such as the “Windows” operating system or the “Office” office software.
ALPHABET
Google is countering the threat of competition from ChatGPT with “Bard,” which is based on a similar technology. However, Bard got off to a false start in February 2023 when the software gave the wrong answer to a question in a Google advertising video. As a result, Alphabet shares slide and the company’s market value shrinks by $100 billion within one day. A few weeks later, Google announced an AI “magic wand” for various products such as email or word processing, which, among other things, should make automated summaries possible. According to a media report, the more powerful “Bard” successor “Gemini” is already in the starting blocks.
ANTHROPIC
Google also has a stake in Anthropic, which was founded by former OpenAI employees. The AI start-up promotes its ChatGPT competitor as secure. The software will not provide users with instructions on how to build weapons or use racist language. “Claude 2” is also specialized in processing particularly extensive commands, for example to summarize contract texts. The video conferencing specialist Zoom, which also holds shares in Anthropic, wants to incorporate AI into its programs. Investors also include Europe’s largest software house SAP and its US competitor Salesforce. Amazon wants to pump up to $4 billion into the start-up.
APPLE
According to a media report, the iPhone provider is working on a competitor to ChatGPT and Bard. It is based on the “Ajax” language model and is internally called “Apple GPT”. The company is officially holding back from making any announcements on the subject.
ELON MUSK
The head of the electric car manufacturer Tesla and the short message service Twitter, which has now been renamed “X”, is planning a truth-seeking AI called “TruthGPT” as a competitor to ChatGPT and Bard. According to insiders, he poached specialists from Google for this purpose. He also had the company X.AI entered in the company register. Musk is one of the founders of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, but retired from there years ago. In the past few months he has repeatedly pointed out the dangers of AI. He is also one of the signatories of an open letter calling for a moratorium on the development of generative AI.
META
The Facebook parent is launching its AI software LLaMa, which is aimed at the research community and government agencies. It requires significantly less computing power than the competition’s offerings. According to a media report, a more powerful successor is already in development. In addition, Meta has developed SAM (Segment Anything Model). This AI can identify individual objects within an image or video.
BAIDU
“Ernie” from Chinese Google rival Baidu is considered the most promising Chinese ChatGPT challenger. According to the company, the current version of this AI performs better than ChatGPT in some areas. It also supports plug-ins, small additional programs for special tasks.
ALIBABA
Amazon competitor Alibaba is working on an AI called “Tongyi Qianwen” (Truth from a Thousand Questions). The software will initially be integrated into the company’s messaging app DingTalk and the voice assistant Tmall Genie. At the same time, “Tongyi Wanxiang” comes onto the market. This AI specializes in generating images and is intended to compete with “Dall-E” from OpenAI and “Midjourney”.
There are two AIs targeting LLaMa from Meta – “Qwen-7B” and “Qwen-7B-Chat”. They are slimmed down versions of “Tongyi Qianwen”. Similar to Facebook’s parent AI, the program code is free accessible (“Open Source”). “Qwen” is intended for researchers and companies around the world.
INFLECTION AI
The start-up advertises the alleged emotional intelligence of its AI “Pi”. To this end, Inflection AI invested a lot of time in developing behavioral guidelines. The chatbot is suitable for everyday tasks, but not for generating program code or longer texts like ChatGPT.
SALES FORCE
The SAP competitor is launching with EinsteinGPT. The basic framework of the software comes from ChatGPT, but according to the information it is expanded to include its own components.
HUAWEI
The group, best known as a telecommunications supplier, is developing various AI under the name “Pangu” that will be used, among other things, in drug development.
TENCENT, JD.COM
According to insiders, Tencent is entering the ring with “HunyuanAide”. The world’s largest video game provider has put together a development team for this purpose. JD.com, a Chinese online retailer, is joining the race for AI technology leadership with “ChatJD”.
KUNLUN TECH
The Chinese video game developer says it wants to integrate ChatGPT into the “Opera” browser. Kunlun took over the majority of its Norwegian developer Opera Software in 2020. At the same time, the group wants to develop a Chinese version of ChatGPT, the program code of which is freely accessible (“open source”).
MORE CHINESE AI PROJECTS
According to an insider, Chinese video game provider NetEase wants to improve its learning software with the help of AI properties. State-backed short video platform Kuaishou plans to improve customer service using AI, among other things. Cybersecurity specialist 360 Security is experimenting with ChatGPT-like technology, but has not yet announced a roadmap for a market launch. Inspur, a data center supplier, says it has been working on AI for a long time.
