“It will be a special highlight.” Austria’s women’s soccer team boss Irene Fuhrmann is full of anticipation for Tuesday’s Nations League home game against France (6:30 p.m., ORF 1): More than 9,000 spectators will fill Austria Wien’s Generali Arena – so many have never been to a woman in Austria -Football game included.

The previous record is eleven years old and is 3,630 spectators who watched the 2-0 defeat against Russia in the play-off first leg in St. Pölten on October 21, 2012. “Now we have what we always wanted. I’m incredibly happy,” said Verena Hanshaw, who is playing her 100th international match. “It doesn’t get any better than this for a hundred euros.”

“The fan response can help us get one or two percentage points,” said Fuhrmann. That will also be necessary against France: against the World Cup quarter-finalists, European Championship semi-finalists and the current fifth-placed team in the world rankings, the result in eight duels so far has been two draws. Fuhrmann once again rates France as “one level above Norway”, against whom they had a lucky 1-1 draw at the start of the National League last Friday.

France is the clear favorite

“We all can’t wait to play against a great opponent in front of so many spectators,” said Sarah Puntigam. The former France legionnaire, who played with three current French team players at Montpellier between 2018 and 2022, knows what to expect. “The French are clearly favorites. We need a great day. We’ll have that, then we’ll annoy them.”
