“There were attacks on the port infrastructure in Izmail County,” the military governor of Odessa, Oleh Kiper, said on Tuesday after the overnight attacks. The injured are truck drivers. One was treated on site and the second was taken to hospital for a serious hand injury. According to Kiper, warehouses and almost 30 trucks were damaged. Six wagons were completely burned out. The Ukrainian Air Force reported early in the morning that a total of 38 kamikaze drones were launched by Russia towards Ukraine during the night from the Crimean peninsula, which has been occupied since 2014. 26 of them were shot down.
After the start of its war of aggression, Russia imposed a naval blockade on Ukrainian ports, which was only relaxed by the agreement on the shipment of Ukrainian grain in the summer of 20222. Moscow suspended the agreement in July. Since then, the Russian military has increasingly attacked the port facilities and grain silos in the Odessa region, which is considered the most important hub for grain exports by sea. On Monday night, the city itself once again became the target of attacks, with the ferry station building and an adjacent hotel being destroyed.
Despite Russia’s suspension of the agreement, Ukraine continues to try to bring grain to world markets, partly overland and partly through the river ports in the Danube Delta. Kiev has also set up its own temporary corridor in the Black Sea for the passage of freighters. Several foreign ships have already used this successfully.
