After gang rape: 9 teenagers arrested in Italy

After two underage girls were raped by youth gangs in the southern Italian problem town of Caivano, the police arrested nine young people. The Naples public prosecutor’s office announced that they were 7 minors and 2 adults. They are therefore suspected of raping the two girls and filming the act with their cell phones. The city is known for its mafia activities and juvenile crime.

Caivano, not far from the southern Italian port city of Naples in Campania, achieved notoriety at the end of August. There, two girls aged ten and twelve were raped by youth gangs. The ages of the two cousins ​​were initially given as eleven and 13. The incidents in the city sparked widespread outrage in the Mediterranean country. Italy’s ultra-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the community and spoke of an “inhumane act” that shocked the whole of Italy.

According to an initial reconstruction by investigators, the young people are said to have lured the two girls to an abandoned sports center in the notorious Parco Verde district and raped them there. They are said to have filmed the crime with cell phones. According to Italian media reports, the gang rape was reported to have been broadcast during a live video call. As it now turns out, the girls are said to have been abused by young people in other places in the past.

The community with around 35,000 inhabitants is considered a social hotspot and stronghold of organized crime. The Camorra mafia organization, which is active in the Campania region, is based in the area. After Meloni’s visit, two major raids took place. The right-wing politician announced tough action and appointed a special government representative to address the problems in the city.
