The minister of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP), José Luis Faleroannounced that October could be a key month for what is projected as the first highway in Uruguay in the metropolitan area, although its construction would not begin until next year.

Next month – which is only a week away – the government hopes to begin defining the highway project to the east, one of the alternatives that the MTOP proposed as a solution to the mobility problem between Montevideo and Cannelloni, mainly due to the significant congestion in the Interspa Route.

What is the idea of MTOP for the highway?

As Falero explained to Subrayado, the idea is that the highway begins four or six kilometers north of the intersection of the Interbalnearia Route and the The airport of Carrasco. From there it would extend eastwards rural zonesnot urbanized, to Route 34 and 87.

Likewise, the highway would pass over these two routes and continue to Route 8, a couple of kilometers before the intersection with Route 11. The objective is for it to be a rapid transit routewithout cuts—that is, routes or roads that cross it from side to side—that avoid the section of the Interbalnearia between Montevideo and Atlantis.

The minister also clarified that the new highway will be a double lane, with a barrier in the middle that, every few kilometers, has a chance to open to turn back in cases of emergency.

The first highway in Uruguay

The project of what would be the first highway in Uruguay was announced by Minister Falero at the end of last week, and its objective is to “be able redistribute those going east on the highway and those going towards the Coast City”.

“The Interbalnearia does not allow us to have a greater number of routes because it is very limited and very absorbed by the urban plot on both sides,” he highlighted, emphasizing that this route is not a highway as such.

“We have to think differently about the infrastructure of the Uruguay, We continue as we did 30 years ago and everything has surpassed us,” said Falero in this regard, and stressed that “production has multiplied by four in recent years,” which means, in principle, that there are four times more on the routes. of trucks.
