The deadline to approve both bills expires at the end of October, so the government is working around the clock with representatives of all parties.

The government began a series of meetings with representatives of all political parties with the aim of achieving rapid debate and sanction of the reform of the Professional and Banking Funds —within the framework of the social security reform broader that was approved in Uruguay-, before the election year.

The government’s objective is to achieve a multiparty agreement regarding the projects that seek to rescue both the Retirement and Pension Fund for University Professionals (Cjppu) as the Bank Retirement and Pension Fund (CJPB). The thing is that time is ticking, and at the end of October the deadline allowed by the Constitution to approve initiatives that imply budget increases, prior to the general elections.

For this reason, a delegation led by the secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, and the minister of Work and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, a round of meetings began today with representatives of all parties. The arguments are that the projects seek, in both cases, to address the “asset and viability crisis” about their finances, as pointed out by the head of the MTSS.

In search of multiparty agreement

“As the bills are in Parliament, and before their consideration begins in the corresponding committees, we are presenting them to all parties. We just did it with him Colorado Party. And we’re going to have a meeting with Town meeting, with the Broad Front, with the National Party, Independent Party and People’s Party“, stated Mieres about the plans of the Executive Branch.

According to the minister, the changes introduced by the parliamentary initiatives seek to advance “the convergence times with respect to the common pension regime”, and range from “parameters, replacement rates, number of years of contribution, retirement age, etc.”

“Hopefully he gets quick treatment. It is mandatory according to the Constitution that voting before the end of Octoberso it needs a quick process,” added the leader of the Colorado Party and head of the MTSS.

Asked about the result of the first meeting, which took place at the former president’s house Julio María Sanguinetti in the neighborhood Punta Carretas, Mieres said that there was “a fluid dialogue.” “They know the situation. There was no type of questioning,” he noted. In that sense, the minister expressed that they hope that all parties show “a broad support” for both projects.
