The neglect of pets often reaches unbelievable proportions. On Monday, a man dropped off a budgie at the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter in Lochen that his cat had found in his garden in Mondsee and brought to him. She was probably only able to catch the bird because it was very sick and neglected. He died shortly after arrival.
“You can’t take in food with a beak that is so extremely long and curved,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler, horrified. “In addition, his feet are very crusty with mange mites. The poor guy had multiple problems and would probably have starved or died of thirst in a short time.”
Pet ownership is an area with a very high number of unreported cases of silent, hidden animal suffering. There are no official controls on keeping animals in private households. That’s why Pfotenhilfe not only appeals to you to think carefully about keeping pets yourself beforehand, but also to always take a close look at pets among friends or relatives and to speak to the owners about any abnormalities. They are often unable to take adequate care of their animals due to age or other reasons. In all of these cases, it is vital that they are reported using the contact form on www.pfotenhilfe.at. If necessary, these tips are treated confidentially and passed on to the authorities anonymously. “Please don’t turn a blind eye to animal suffering,” appeals Stadler on the occasion of the upcoming World Animal Protection Day on October 4th.
