According to media reports, additional police checkpoints have been set up at certain points near the previous border crossings in the southeast of the country and in the coastal region. Slovenia should follow Italy’s example.

The tightened police controls are intended to be compensatory measures near the state border, but not border controls as such, as the Schengen Code allows in exceptional cases, the daily newspaper reported “Delo” on-line. In addition to the previous police patrols that operate inland, there are now also patrols that carry out stricter controls near the former border crossings, the N1 news portal reported.

Slovenian Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar has called a press conference for the early afternoon where he will present measures to control migration flows. The checks will be introduced in the area of the Novo Mesto Police Department in the towns of Rigonce, Trnovec near Metlika and Obrežje, the news portal reported “24ur.com”. In the area of the Koper Police Department, they will take place in the towns of Rakitovec, Podgorje and Sočerga.

After Croatia took over the protection of the Schengen border at the beginning of the year, the number of irregular border crossings into Slovenia has increased significantly. In the first eight months, Slovenian police arrested more than 36,000 people, three times as many as in the same period last year. Of these, 34,500 people entered the country via Croatia. More than 90 percent of all migrants crossed the Slovenian-Croatian border in the southeast of the country.

In June, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob assured during his visit to Vienna that Slovenia would not introduce border controls with Croatia despite the increased number of migrants. The neighboring country considers the controls at the internal borders to be ineffective and repeatedly calls for an end to the controls that Austria has maintained on the border with Slovenia since 2015.
