As the WKStA announced in a press release on Wednesday, in addition to the founder of the association, five other people were brought to trial. There is still no date for the hearing at the Vienna Regional Court for Criminal Matters.
The main defendant is said to have obtained funding from the City of Vienna over the years and used at least 16 million euros privately for an inappropriate or intended purpose. Among other things, he is said to have bought and renovated several properties for his four children, while also acting as a building contractor for the construction work. He then hired the craftsmen at the club or billed them through the club, it is said. Basically, the man is said to have financed his living and his entire family with funds from the non-profit organization. According to the indictment, he even ran a riding school.
Bogus invoices and manipulated documents
The main defendant received full funding from the City of Vienna totaling 36 million euros from 2009 to 2016 – this sum represents the damage incriminated by the WKStA, which will be the subject of the proceedings. The man is said to have operated largely with fictitious invoices and manipulated accounting documents, and the annual statements were also apparently falsified. When it comes to plundering the funding pots for one’s own purposes, the WKStA states: “The annual private withdrawals far exceeded the annual salary due to the managing director of a kindergarten.”
The association “Alt-Wien – MUKU – Working Group for Multicultural Kindergarten Pedagogy” existed since 1966. 50 years later – in the summer of 2016 – it operated kindergartens at 32 locations and after-school care centers in nine branches. Up to 2,300 children were looked after in the association’s facilities in the federal capital. After financial irregularities and corresponding media reports were discovered, the city of Vienna imposed a subsidy stop and the club had to file for bankruptcy in August 2016. At that time, 773 children were on the streets; their parents and the city of Vienna had to quickly place the little ones in other care places.
