Heber advocated for the return of the DEA to Uruguay

The leader of the Interior portfolio, Luis Alberto Heberpresented the measures that the ministry is carrying out to combat the drug trafficking – a phenomenon that he described as that which changed the Uruguay –, while advancing the possibility of reinstalling the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the country.

Yesterday, during a meeting organized by the Association of Marketing Managers of Uruguay (ADM) – where the Minister of National Defense was present, Javier Garcia; the head of Housing and Territorial Planning, Raúl Lozano, and the general director of the Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, Nicolás Martinelli – the Minister of the Interior advanced the measures taken to combat drug trafficking.

In that sense, he assured that the portfolio addresses the problem from three dimensions: large-scale drug trafficking, distribution networks and micro-trafficking or drug dealing. On the other hand, he highlighted the importance of working together with other countries in the region, At the same time, he advanced the possibility of the DEA being reinstalled in Uruguay.

Increase in troops, patrols and artificial intelligence

Regarding the most tangible measures, the minister assured that 1,160 new vehicles were incorporated into the police fleetwhich will be intended to reinforce the patrolling. In addition, he recalled the incorporation of 1,900 troops for executive tasks. On the other hand, he assured that, by the end of the administration, the amount of security cameras reaching a total of 2,000.

At the same time, he explained that he plans to have at least 1,000 new troops in the Republican Guard and the creation of four new barracks in the interior and in Montevideo. artificial intelligence to video monitoring tasks, to contribute to crime prevention, as well as the use of Shot Spotter technology, which will georeference the emission of shots.

Drug trafficking and the increase in prisoners

Heber assured that the entry of drug trafficking into the country is what generated a decisive increase in the prison population and the commission of crimes such as robberies, thefts, and homicides. “Drug trafficking is what changed our Uruguay”, the minister lamented. In that sense, he assured that the ministry is investigating the causes of crimes and criminal recidivism, although he considered that the shorter the time of incarceration, the greater the recidivism.

On the other hand, he explained that by the end of the administration he intends to end overcrowding in the prison system – considering that the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR) assists 2,500 inmates – where a quick resolution is intended. In that sense, they intend to expand the prisons and build three new ones with places of 460 each.

Delgado’s concern about drug trafficking

The Secretary of the Presidency, Alvaro Delgadowas concerned about the cases of drug traffickers sent to house arrest by the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ)referring to the last criminal who managed to escape due to the lack of speed in issuing a sentence to the drug trafficker.
