In the first eight months, Linz tourism set a new record with 663,500 overnight stays. That is 53,000 more overnight stays than in the comparable period of the previous record year 2019 and is therefore an increase of almost nine percent. According to Tourism City Councilor Doris Lang-Mayerhofer (VP), tourism throughout Austria is on the rise, but, in contrast to Linz, has not yet quite reached the number of overnight stays from 2019.

Festivals in June

She sees the reasons for this in the city’s cultural and event offerings. The strong June in particular, with its large open airs such as the Lido Sounds, the Bubble Days or the SBÄM Festival, brought a record of 104,058 overnight stays in one month. “We want to continue on this path because the population and guests benefit equally from this offer,” says Lang-Mayerhofer.

Sustainable tourism

The reason for the interim assessment was World Tourism Day on September 27th, which in 2023 was dedicated to the topic of tourism and environmentally friendly investments. Lang-Mayerhofer sees the investment in shore power systems for Danube cruises recently presented by Stadt, Land und Linz AG as a “showcase example of sustainable change in tourism”. This would not only save up to 1.6 million liters of diesel every year, but would also avoid smell and noise and make shipping on the Danube more environmentally friendly.
