What a crazy cup evening it was in Rieder’s Klaus-Roitinger Stadium: It wasn’t until 11:49 p.m. that Rapid had brought the regional league team Gurten to their knees 5-2 after extra time – after a 47-minute interruption immediately after the second whistle kicked off, because the floodlights in the old Rieder football stadium were out.
The forced break was a blessing for last year’s finalist. Marco Grüll (96th) and the goals from Fally Mayulu (102nd, 108th) allowed the Viennese team to leave the Innviertel as round of 16, even though the Bundesliga team had faltered threateningly beforehand. “The first half was really bad for us, the opponent was clearly better,” said Grüll honestly. “During the extension, the forces on belts decreased.”
