Authorities from the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries described the inspection as “a historic milestone.”

China carried out the first virtual audit in the Clay Refrigerator SA and marked a milestone in the industry equine meat, as reported from the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), in a new approach of Uruguay with the Asian giant.

The portfolio led by the minister Fernando Mattos reported that the Chinese General Administration of Customs carried out the inspection, which it described as “a historic milestone for the horse meat industry”, within the framework of the protocol agreed between both countries.

The meeting was coordinated by the Animal Industry, Animal Health, Veterinary Laboratories divisions and the International Affairs Unit of the MGAP. The audit yielded a positive result and now there remains communication from the Asian giant’s government in the coming days.

It may also be good news for the Florida Refrigerator, which reopened its doors with reduced capacity a few weeks ago, due to the lack of authorization from the Asian country, the main market for the plant acquired by the Lequio Group.

The government renegotiates export protocols with China

In recent days it was learned that the government and its Chinese counterpart are going to renegotiate their export protocols for meat bovine and ovine for the first time since 2018, something for which the Asian country gave its approval and the Executive needs to evaluate the counterproposals of the document, called “Protocol on inspection, quarantine and veterinary health requirements for bovine and ovine meat exported from Uruguay and China”.

The Executive seeks to reduce the waiting period for livestock in agricultural establishments from 90 to 46 days, prior to being sent to slaughter for sale abroad. With that goal in mind, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRREE), Nicolas AlbertoniI travel to China to hold meetings with health authorities of the Chinese government.

These negotiations could have their corollary next month when the president Luis Lacalle Pou trip to the Asian country, a tour that could crown with a meeting with his counterpart Xi Jinping.
