The OBM Bucklige World Rally in the Krumbach area took place two weeks ago. The Mühlviertler Simon Wagner and co-pilot Gerald Winter are confirmed as state champions for 2023, the defeated duo Hermann Neubauer and Ursula Mayrhofer are still licking their wounds. The Salzburger and the Upper Austrian have every reason to act with their heads held high, as a story that happened before the season finale proves.

It was Friday, September 15th, day of sightseeing for the rally aces to prepare for the next two days with their 12 special stages and to record each section in writing. Hermann Neubauer: “After our last special stage inspection, the Kirchschlag circuit, I briefly looked over at Ursi because of the writing. Then out of the corner of my eye I noticed something on the ground next to Landesstraße 149 in front of a house. ‘I think’ there’s someone there now “It’s right,” I said to her. But we were already past the building. But then that didn’t give us any peace and we turned around.”

In fact, the two top athletes found Wolfgang R. lying on the ground in front of the house near Hollenthon, barely conscious. The fact that a huge pool of blood had formed around the 69-year-old man made the already dramatic situation even worse. Neubauer: “Ursi immediately got the gentleman into a stable position professionally and I called the emergency services. A short time later the rescue team arrived and took him to the hospital in Oberwart.” So much for the usefulness of a mandatory first aid course for rally drivers.

At the clinic in Burgenland, Wolfgang R. was diagnosed with a burst artery in his leg. The man, who had already lost a significant amount of blood, should not have been allowed to lie unnoticed on his property for much longer. The day after the rally, the phone rang at Hermann Neubauer’s home in St. Michael im Lungau. At the other end, a happy Wolfgang R. said: “I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your attention and willingness to help. According to the doctor, without your quick intervention I would no longer be alive.”
