Linz Netz GmbH (a subsidiary of Linz AG) is investing around 15 million euros in the modernization of its Friensdorf substation in the municipality of Wartberg. Commissioning is scheduled for early 2025.
The Friensdorf substation supplies the communities of Gallneukirchen, Engerwitzdorf, Unterweitersdorf, Wartberg ob der Aist, Pregarten, Hagenberg, Neumarkt, Kefermarkt, Gutau, Schönau, Bad Zell, Pierbach, Rechberg and Tragwein. An additional transformer will be installed during the renovation. This increases the power capacity from the current 30 to 60 mega-volt amperes. This means that around 10,000 additional households could be supplied. At the same time, the 110 kV outdoor switchgear will be replaced by a gas-insulated 110 kV indoor switchgear. This brings advantages in terms of maintenance and saves space. This will create additional space on the site to build a Linz Netz GmbH service center. In addition, the space gained can be used for future capacity expansions.
Reinforcing substations is a prerequisite for creating additional capacity for feeding in PV systems, says Linz AG board director Josef Siligan: “Grid expansion is a mammoth task. These are huge infrastructure projects with which the progressive electrification of the Society can be further advanced.” Reinforcing the Friensdorf substation is the next step towards the energy transition.
