“We cannot arrest migrants for making the attempt,” the official said.

Lucero added that people who cross illegally into the United States and surrender to immigration authorities are immediately repatriated to Mexico or their place of origin and are also punished for five years, during which time they cannot request humanitarian asylum again in That country.

Meanwhile, in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, several migrants were crossing the Rio Grande (called the Rio Grande in the United States), which had a higher flow than usual.

The migrants carried their belongings high up, with the water reaching the necks of several of them.

“If we pass, they will deport all of us, all of us. We are going to do everything possible to pass,” Venezuelan Eduard Emilio Carpio, 25, told AFP.

The Mexican government has admitted to being overwhelmed by the number of migrants crossing its territory to reach the United States, the vast majority coming from Venezuela, Cuba and Central American countries.

In addition, it toughened measures to prevent the passage of irregular migrants through its territory using freight trains, after the largest local railway operator stopped 30% of its operations last week, overwhelmed by the flow of undocumented immigrants.

In August there were a record of almost 233,000 migrants crossing the southern border of the United States and the escalation continues in September. Mexican immigration authorities confirmed that so far this month they have detained 189,000 migrants, which represents a daily average of 9,000 people.
