The main source of the data with which the Ministry of Tourism —and, particularly, the Research and Statistics Department of the portfolio led by Tabaré Viera— They are the surveys at the entry and exit points of the country. However, the advancement of technology and the need to have more detailed information led authorities to look for new alternatives for data collection that, in turn, allow for better data collection. diagnoses and balances in relation to the national tourism sector.

For this, the Ministry made an agreement with Antel which enabled the incorporation of new data and a more detailed disaggregation of the movements of Uruguayan tourists in “real time”. The recent update, meanwhile, extends to the information from HG technology —property of the state telecommunications company—, so the Tourism portfolio will be able to access data on visitors to the region and “trace” their journey through the country, according to the person in charge of the Department of Research and Statistics, Felipe Gomez, to the weekly Search.
The idea is that, before the end of the year, a first part of this progress in the use of data will be presented on the Ministry of Tourism website, through a dynamic viewer that updates the information of the internal mobility of Uruguay. Already in 2024 it will be “enriched” with more elements.
More data available to analyze
The initiative also includes the digital license plate, driven by the Sucive and available, according to official plans, around the end of this year. This system will work using the same tag which is used for electronic tolling and will contain the vehicle information. While HG is the developer of Sucive, the Ministry of Tourism You will also have access to this information which, at a more advanced stage, will allow you to know not only the internal movement, but also the movement of visitors from abroad, mainly from Argentina and Brazil, where they use the same traceability technology.
Ultimately, the idea is to have “accurate data” in the short term and improve statistics. For example, you can obtain an overview of which are the most visited circuits in the country. It will also consider the camera information distributed throughout Uruguay; as well as data from flight booking platforms. “It is a scalable project,” said Gómez, in this regard.
Another advance that they intend to achieve in this sense is greater control, particularly, in the border with Argentinabased on the exodus of Uruguayans that has been observed in recent months, motivated by the exchange difference with the neighboring country and the price gap.
The current information provided by the National direction of Migration is far from being sufficient to be able to address the phenomenon appropriately, so the new system in which the Ministry of Tourism could be a solution to this mystery.
