As expected, the supervisory board of Energie AG decided to build the Ebensee pumped storage power plant on Thursday afternoon. With a total cost of around 450 million euros, this is the largest investment in the company’s history to date.
As exclusively reported, the cost of this is “green battery” significantly higher than stated in the original plans. Nevertheless, the company is sticking to it. “The Ebensee pumped storage power plant is a central part of the transformation process and the energy transition in Upper Austria, for which Energie AG is intended to be the driving force”says State Economic Councilor and Supervisory Board Chairman Markus Achleitner (VP) to the OÖNachrichten.
The pumped storage power plant is intended to serve as a kind of green battery to provide balancing power when wind, sun and water do not provide enough electricity. With, in the best case scenario, free excess electricity, water can be pumped upwards. When the price of electricity is high, it can be drained and electricity can be generated from it. The first plans were made 15 years ago. At times, however, there were doubts about its economic viability.
Energie AG’s energy transition plans envisage the production of an additional 1.2 billion terawatt hours from renewable energy sources. One half should be used for e-mobility, the other half for the operation of heat pumps, says Achleitner.
“Like health insurance”
The State Economic Council is also sending a message to the federal government in this context. It cannot be the case that alleged excess profits have to be paid to the federal government. “We need these profits to quickly implement the energy transition. The less we have left, the slower we are”says Achleitner and refers to the experiences with the health insurance company. At that time, Upper Austria was also deducted 300 million euros from Vienna, and they had nothing left of it, says the regional economic councilor.
