On Friday night, at 1:20 a.m., a 37-year-old in the Steyr-Land district was woken up – his throat was scratchy and there was a strong smell of smoke. The power in the entire apartment building had already failed at this point. The man immediately woke up his 29-year-old partner and her 3-year-old son and left the house with them. “He used the flashlight function on his cell phone to help him do this,” said the police. The 37-year-old immediately alerted the fire department. He then tried to reach an 82-year-old neighbor on the ground floor via the garage, but in vain because thick smoke blocked his way.
The arriving fire department rescued the unconscious senior citizen from her bedroom and brought her outside through the bedroom window. After emergency medical first aid, the injured person was taken to the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Clinic in Steyr.
2 cats could not escape from the apartment and were only rescued dead.
Electric stove was not switched off
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electric stove that was switched on, according to the police. This caused other items on the stove to catch fire. There was significant damage to the apartment.
