The public prosecutor’s office had long ago warned the university clinic in the Dutch port city about the student’s psychologically suspicious behavior, according to a letter from the judiciary published by the media on Friday. The 32-year-old student killed three people on Thursday. He was arrested and his motive is still unclear.
The man was due to appear before the judge on Friday. According to the letter, the judiciary had also informed the Erasmus University Hospital that the man was known to the police. He had a previous conviction for animal cruelty. In the letter, the judiciary warned against awarding the student a medical diploma. The university has not yet responded to the reports.

According to police, the suspect initially shot a 39-year-old woman in an apartment. Her 14-year-old daughter was seriously injured and later died in hospital. The man then shot a lecturer in the university clinic and set fire to it. According to media reports, the woman is said to have been a neighbor of the man and to have reported him for animal cruelty.
Politicians and the royal family were shocked. Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, as did the royal couple. Prime Minister Mark Rutte was also horrified.
