The board of the Institute for Machine Learning and head of the LIT AI Lab at Johannes Kepler University Linz has paved the way to today’s AI with his “long-short-time memory” (LSTM) technology. The reason for being honored with the highly respected AI innovation award is also Hochreiter’s current research – on his own language model, which, according to preliminary tests, is even superior to the industry leader GPT4. To put it into perspective: GPT-4 is the successor system to GPT-3.5, on which the chatbot ChatGPT is based.

The German AI Prize was awarded for the fifth time on Thursday in Berlin and is endowed with 35,000 euros in the innovation category.

The 56-year-old Hochreiter sees the award as an incentive: “The award is a great honor and a confirmation of my previous research work. It is also an incentive for me and my team at the JKU to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of people and for our benefit “To develop society sustainably,” the Bavarian native is quoted as saying in a press release.

In the OÖN interview: Hochreiter talks about ChatGPT, the AI curse and criticism of politicians:

“A great scientist”

“A great success for a great scientist,” said outgoing JKU Rector Meinhard Lukas, pleased about the honor. “Hochreiter shows what impact we as Austrians and Europeans can have on shaping future technologies. That’s encouraging – because only if we help shape it can we ensure that European values flow into the further development of artificial intelligence.”

Stefan Koch, who will be the new rector of the JKU from October 1st, also congratulates Hochreiter: “The award shows that the JKU is internationally positioned here and is making a significant contribution to this revolution. That makes us very proud!” Koch said they want to continue working on this groundbreaking technology “with all commitment.”
