Las Vegas police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of hip-hop star Tupac Shakur. The rapper was shot dead in a passing car almost three decades ago. Duane “Keffe D” Davis was taken into custody on Friday morning; according to US media, nothing is known about the exact allegations. An arraignment is not expected until later Friday.
Shakur (also known under his pseudonyms 2Pac or Makaveli) was one of the most successful rap artists of the 1990s. The musician, actor and activist has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and in June he received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His death was previously considered unexplained. The crime is said to have been preceded by clashes between rival rappers from the east and west coasts.
Shakur was initially seriously injured in the shooting on September 7, 1996, but died in a hospital six days later at the age of 25. According to media reports, Davis, who has now been arrested, is said to have admitted in interviews and in his 2019 memoir “Compton Street Legend” that he was sitting in the Cadillac from which the shots were fired.
Search of the suspect’s wife’s house
According to the US media, Davis’ wife’s house was searched two months ago. The police seized several pieces of evidence. According to British newspaper The Sun, the items were a Vibe magazine with a picture of Tupac, .40 caliber bullets, several computers, a cell phone, a hard drive and boxes of photos.
