Seven people killed in two separate armed attacks in Mexico

At least seven people died in Mexico in two separate armed attacks, one in a hospital and another on the border with the United States, local media reported today.

Five people, including a doctor, died in a shooting that broke out in a private hospital in the city of Culiacán, capital of the northeastern state of Sinaloa, according to a report from the state prosecutor’s office.

The report indicates that a doctor hit by bullets died at the scene, as well as two of the alleged attackers, according to the AFP news agency.

A third gunman was wounded and was taken to a public hospital for treatment, but there, according to authorities, he managed to grab his gun from a police officer and shot himself in the head, killing himself.

A woman who was at the clinic was also hit by gunfire. She was taken to the Red Cross, where she later died as a result of her injuries.

According to local media, the attackers broke into the hospital seeking to kill a man who had been admitted with a gunshot wound, but there were other armed individuals inside and the confrontation broke out.

Sinaloa, where one of the largest drug cartels in Mexico operates, has for decades been the scene of armed confrontations between rival groups or clashes between criminals and security forces.

Mexico has more than 420,000 dead and some 100,000 missing, most attributed to conflicts between criminal organizations, since the launch of a questioned military anti-drug offensive in December 2006.

In addition to the security crisis due to drug trafficking, Mexico faces the challenge of controlling the border with the United States, through which hundreds of people without papers try to cross every day.

In the last few hours, at least two Mexican migrants died and a third was injured on the border at Cerro Cuchumá, in the state of Baja California, when they were trying to cross the border north.

Agents from the Beta Tecate Group of the National Migration Institute of Mexico (INM) who went to the scene reported on the social network

Of the eleven people helped, two women had to be transferred to nearby health centers to be treated for gunshot wounds.

According to the INM version, shortly before dawn the authorities began the ascent to the point where unidentified individuals attacked the migrants.

“There, a man was found wounded by a firearm and two more without vital signs, all three of Mexican nationality,” the INM reported without giving more details about the attack, reported the site TV Latina.

Of the people who left the hill, two women went to nearby health centers to receive treatment for gunshot wounds, the agency said.
