Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev affirmed today that the war in Ukraine will continue until the “destruction of the Nazi regime” and anticipated that new provinces of that country will join Russia.
The invasion “will continue until the complete destruction of the Nazi regime in kyiv and the liberation from the hands of the enemy of originally Russian territories,” Medvedev wrote on the Telegram social network.
“Victory will be ours. And new provinces will join Russia,” added the current number two on the Russian Security Council, as reported by the AFP news agency.
In line, the president, Vladimir Putin, promised “regeneration and socioeconomic development” of the four provinces already annexed in Ukraine, in a speech recorded and released in the last few hours by the Kremlin.
“By defending our fellow citizens in the Donbass and New Russia, we are defending Russia itself and fighting for our homeland, our sovereignty, our spiritual values and our unity,” the president said in the video.
At the end of September 2022, after the organization of referendums considered invalid by Kiev and its Western allies, Putin signed the annexation of the Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk, which together form the Donbass region, as well as Kherson and Zaporizhia.
These annexations, in areas partially controlled by Russian troops, were strongly condemned by kyiv and the West, who consider them illegal.
September 30, marking one year since those referendums were held, was decreed by Putin as “Reunification Day.”
However, Moscow only partially controls those four provinces and Ukraine is waging a counteroffensive to try to recapture them.
