The 70 euro limit for a day ticket in high season is exceeded in almost all major ski areas. According to a survey by the APA, you will have to dig deep into your pockets in the Arlberg with 75 euros. The reasons for the increase are almost unanimously cited as sharp increases in energy and wage costs. “The energy prices are a catastrophe for us,” said Werner Frießer, managing director of Axamer Lizum in Tyrol. “This year we are paying 1.1 million euros instead of the previous 360,000 euros,” and this despite the better tariffs for cable car users. Another “game changer” is the interest on investments made. And the Salzburg industry spokesman Erich Egger (Schmittenhöhe) cited the increase in KV for cable car employees by a good ten percent as another reason.
Arlberger Bergbahnen: Day ski pass for a whopping 75 euros
The frontrunners in Austria are the Arlberger Bergbahnen, which charge a whopping 75 euros for a day ski pass in the high season this year. This is twelve percent more than in the previous year, said authorized representative Arthur Moser in response to an APA request. He emphasized that the prices were calculated “based on general inflation or the development of the specific costs” of the mountain railways. Due to the size of the ski area, the “relationship between price and offer” is “absolutely consistent” in a national and international comparison, said Moser. Kitzbühel and Ischgl, with a day ski pass for 72 euros each in the high season, are just below the Arlberg, the Zillertal Arena at 72.50 euros and Sölden at 73 euros in between. The day pass in Axamer Lizum, a ski area near Innsbruck and therefore also heavily used by locals, costs 55 euros this year.
In Salzburg’s largest ski association – Ski amadé – the day ticket will cost 73.50 euros in almost all regions this winter (2022/23: 68.50 euros), in the Gastein Valley it is 73.90 euros. In advance, prices start at 62.50 euros. For the weekly ticket you have to pay 413 euros (advance purchase 351 euros). The day ticket in the country’s second major network, the “Alpin Card” (Saalbach-Hinterglemm/Leogang/Fieberbrunn, Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn), can be purchased for 72 euros – two years ago it was 60.50 euros, last year it was 60.50 euros 66 euros. The weekly ticket costs 409 euros this year (advance purchase 368). It’s cheaper in Obertauern: there the day ticket costs 59 euros, the weekly ticket costs around 357 euros.
Season tickets also become more expensive
Winter sports enthusiasts also have to dig deeper into their pockets this year in the Bregenzerwald (e.g. Damüls-Mellau: 66 euros, previously 61 euros) and in the Montafon. In Montafon, where there are dynamic pricing models in several ski areas, prices of over 55 or 60 euros can be expected from January. The season tickets are correspondingly more expensive, an adult pays 1,114 euros for them in the Arlberg (2022/23: 995 euros), in the Montafon the season ticket currently costs 665 euros.
At the Styrian top dog, the Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen in Schladming and the surrounding area, ticket prices will increase by more than eight percent to up to 73.50 euros for a day ski pass. Early birders online can get lift tickets from 63 euros. This means that you have to pay at least five euros more than last season. In the low season the tariffs are slightly lower. On the Kreischberg the day ski pass is expected to cost 62 euros in the high season and 55 euros in the Lachtal. One of the cheapest day tickets will be available at the Gaberl in the coming season. Operator Thomas Gauss will charge the same amount as last year for the adult day ski pass at 33 euros: “We haven’t increased it because we don’t want to take part in the price spiral.” There is also concern that the next generation of skiers will eventually stop coming.
Up to 10 percent increase in Upper Austria
In the larger ski areas in Upper Austria, prices rise by seven to ten percent: in Hinterstoder, the day ticket costs 56 euros online and 59 euros at the cash desk. And at the Wurzeralm you have to shell out 53 (online) or 56 euros (at the cash desk). In the Dachstein West ski area, a day ticket costs 59.50 euros online and 64 euros at the checkout. At Hochficht, the prices for a day ticket for adults at the checkout rise from 50 to 55 euros; buying online is three euros cheaper. If you regularly put on your skis, you can save money in all areas with season tickets.
In the Carinthian ski areas, day tickets will increase by an average of nine percent. “Nevertheless, with the price increase we are well below last year’s inflation,” said division chairman Manuel Kapeller-Hopfgartner. This year, adults have to pay 62 euros for a day ticket at Nassfeld, Bad Kleinkirchheim, Mölltaler Glacier and Gerlitzen. A day ticket costs 56.50 euros in the Großglockner-Heiligenblut ski area, 60.50 euros at the Katschberg and 51 euros at the Goldeck. Prices remain cheaper in smaller ski areas such as at Klippitztörl at 43 euros or at Petzen at 45.50 euros.
Winter sports enthusiasts in Lower Austria will again have to prepare for more expensive season tickets in 2023/24. After around ten percent last year, this time it should be “around eight percent,” said Markus Redl, managing director of ecoplus Alpin GmbH. In addition, ecoplus Alpin is sticking to the principle of flexible tickets at the Hochkar Bergbahnen, the Ötscher lifts, the Annaberg lifts and the Erlebnisalm Mönichkirchen, Redl reminded of the early bird discount: the earlier you buy, the cheaper day or multi-day tickets are. Season tickets are available in advance from just 400 euros and then for 464 euros.
