Four more people were injured, the emergency services said on Sunday on the online service X, formerly Twitter. The authorities did not rule out the possibility that the death toll could continue to rise. Mayor José Ballesta declared three days of mourning. The cause of the fire initially remained unknown.
According to the information, the emergency services were alerted at around 6 a.m. on Sunday after a fire broke out in one of the discos. The flames quickly spread to other nightclubs.
Operation continues
The rescue workers were only able to enter the building in the Atalayas district at 10 a.m. after the fire was extinguished, it said. The injured are two men aged 41 and 45 and two women aged 22 and 25. They therefore suffered from smoke inhalation.
According to images released by the emergency services, it was the “Teatre” discotheque, also known as “Fonda Milagros”. The images showed dense space rising from the roof of the building. The rescue workers are still on duty, the city administration said on X.
