This is true according to a new one study by trauma surgeons at the MedUni Vienna (AKH) apparently particularly for boys. They account for around 80 percent of those injured after accidents with these “scooters”.
The Viennese trauma surgeon Andrea Schuller and her team (University Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery) and their co-authors looked at the patients treated by their department between January 2015 and December 2022 after falls with the small, foldable companions. “The entire study population included 983 children and adolescents (mean age: 7.9 years),” the trauma surgeons involved wrote in their work published in “Children” (doi: 10.3390/children10091464). The aim was to analyze patient data after scooter accidents for those affected up to the age of 18.
More than 80 percent of the injured were male
Boys and boys made up the majority of those injured who had to be treated at the accident clinic after scooter falls: 81.4 percent or 800 of the 983 people affected were male. For them, the journey on the small-wheeled vehicles, which do not have air-filled tires like the old scooters, ended with more or less serious injuries.
There was hardly any change in the frequency with which patients came to the general hospital after scooter accidents. The scientists: “The frequency of scooter injuries (not electric scooters; note) was relatively the same over the observation period.
53.6 percent of the injuries were therefore minor. These were lacerations, bruises or sprains of joints (527 of the patients). But then there were head injuries with 238 cases (24.5 percent). Leg or arm fractures accounted for 16.9 percent of injuries (166 cases). Injuries to the trunk were diagnosed in 52 cases (5.3 percent).
Experts recommend protective equipment
But that wasn’t everything. On the other hand, a few patients had severe injuries including skull fractures (seven cases), bleeding within the skull (four patients), or bleeding in the abdomen (also four cases). “Although most injuries were minor, there were also serious injuries, which should not be underestimated,” the researchers wrote.
The experts’ advice, even if you’re just going to school, to friends or even to the nearest store on the scooter: protective equipment should always be with you. In any case, helmets and protectors are recommended.
