Open Town Hall (CA) will support the proposal of Broad Front (FA) to exempt the Value Added Tax (VAT) to products from shops coastborder with Argentina.

The senator and leader of CA, Guido Manini Ríosassured that his party is coherent in supporting the initiative of the opposition political force because they had already proposed, almost three years ago, “a bill that says almost exactly the same thing” to alleviate the exchange difference with Argentina.

Within the framework of Accountability, the FA presented this additive in a search for solutions to the consequences of the notorious price gap between both countries, a product of the exchange difference by the exchange rate values on both sides of the pond.

In dialogue with Telemundo, Manini Rios He explained that the FA proposal “empowers the Executive Branch not to collect VAT in a certain radius of the border with Argentina,” in order to put emphasis on the affected merchants on the country’s coast.

The similar proposal that CA had presented almost three years ago would pursue the “elimination of taxes on local commerce.” “It was the time when the bridges were closed and they sought to bring the prices of Uruguay with Argentina to try to maintain jobs (in the future) on this side of the border,” he explained.

“People are not buying in Uruguay, they are buying in Argentina”

The FA proposal takes hold in the ranks of CA, where they understand that “this VAT is not being collected anyway because people are not buying in Uruguayis buying in Argentina,” he expressed Manini Rios.

“Abolishing it (VAT) is in a way bringing prices closer,” he noted. “We were consistent with our proposal three years ago, we would have been incoherent if we had not voted for this proposal made by the FA,” concluded the former commander in chief of the National Army.
