The Steinbach Black Wings clinched their first three-pointer of the new ice hockey season in the sixth game. In the home game against Asiago, the Linz team hit the jackpot on Family Sunday (the game started at 3:30 p.m.) in front of 2,601 spectators. Or the Knott. The pun works both ways.
The unusually early start of the game could have led to a problem for some people: Anyone who wasn’t in their seat at 3:30 p.m. missed Linz’s lead, which would last until the end of the game. After just 38 seconds, Graham Knott converted an assist from Matt MacKenzie to make it 1-0 for the hosts. They dominated the game in the first third and crowned their good performance with the second goal. A shot from Logan Roe was blocked by the goalkeeper, but somehow rolled over the line – 2-0. After that, the big Graham Knott show really started: The 26-year-old used a pass from Lebler and St-Amant in the power play to make it 3-0 and a little later (27th) made it 4-0 in a counterattack. Luke Moncada reduced the score to 4:1 in the 36th minute, but Knott scored his fourth goal at the start of the third period to make it 5:1, burying any hope the guests had. The 2:5 by Matteo Gennaro (51.) no longer had any influence on the outcome of the game.
Thanks to the three points, Linz can stay in touch with the other teams in the table. The Black Wings are tenth with six points. Sixth place (Ljubljana) is currently six points short of one game less. Innsbruck (11 points), Vienna (9) and Klagenfurt (8) take places seven to nine. Behind Linz are Graz (3), Bozen (3) and Asiago (1).
The Linz team continues with a guest game in Innsbruck on Tuesday, the next home game follows on Friday evening against Hydro Fehervar AV19.
